2026 California Football Preview

What’s to like:
California continues to rely on its defense, particularly along the defensive front. The Golden Bears return an experienced group that has played a lot of football together, giving the defense a solid foundation heading into the season. That experience should help Cal remain competitive against the physical offenses throughout the ACC.
The offensive line has also continued to improve over the past few seasons, giving the offense more stability than it has had in previous years. Just as importantly, California rarely beats itself with mistakes. The Golden Bears play disciplined football, avoid costly penalties, and generally force opponents to earn their points. That consistency gives them an opportunity to stay competitive in close games.
What’s not to like:
Travel remains one of California's biggest challenges as a member of the ACC. Long road trips throughout the season create added obstacles that few other programs have to deal with, making week-to-week consistency more difficult.
Roster depth is another concern, particularly over the course of a long season. Injuries at key positions could become difficult to overcome, and the offense still needs more explosive playmakers capable of changing games with one play. Until those areas improve, Cal may struggle to keep pace with the conference's top teams.

Final Thoughts:
California enters another season leaning on its defense and disciplined style of play. The Golden Bears have enough experience along the defensive front to stay competitive, but improving the offense and developing more depth will determine how far they can climb in the conference standings. If California can create more explosive plays, it has the potential to surprise a few teams this season.
