What’s to like:
Pittsburgh continues to build its defense around a disruptive defensive line, and that has become one of the program's biggest strengths under Pat Narduzzi. The Panthers have consistently developed players up front who can pressure the quarterback and slow opposing running games. That physical style of play has helped Pittsburgh stay competitive against some of the ACC's better offenses.
The linebacker group should also be one of the strengths of the defense. Pittsburgh has enough experience at the position to play aggressively while limiting mistakes, and that fits the identity the Panthers have established over the years. Regardless of the opponent, Pittsburgh rarely backs away from playing a physical brand of football, and that toughness continues to define the program.
What’s not to like:
The passing game remains one of Pittsburgh's biggest question marks. While the Panthers have been able to rely on their defense, the offense has struggled at times to consistently stretch the field or generate explosive plays through the air. Becoming more balanced offensively would make the team much more difficult to defend.
The offensive line also needs to become more consistent. Better protection would give the quarterback more time to operate while creating more opportunities in the running game. In addition, Pittsburgh has to improve its turnover margin, as winning the possession battle often becomes the difference in close conference games.

Final Thoughts:
Pittsburgh continues to rely on its physical defense as the foundation of the program. The Panthers should once again be strong along the defensive front and at linebacker, giving them an opportunity to stay competitive in conference play. Improving the passing game and creating a more balanced offense will be the biggest challenges heading into the season.
