2026 Vanderbilt Football Preview

What’s to like:
Vanderbilt enters the season with something they have not had in a long time, stability. Head coach Clark Lea has steadily improved the program, and the Commodores have become a much tougher team to play. They are more physical, compete for four quarters, and have developed an identity that allows them to stay competitive.
The biggest reason for that improvement has been the defense. Vanderbilt is much more fundamentally sound and no longer gives up easy plays on a consistent basis. While the Commodores still have work to do before joining the op of the league, they have reached the point where competing for a bowl game has become a realistic expectation.
What’s not to like:
The biggest concern for Vanderbilt is their roster depth. The starting lineup is good enough to compete, but inquires at key positions could quickly become a problem. Unlike many teams in the SEC, the Commodores do not have the same level of depth to replace experienced starters over the course of a long season.
There is also still a talent gap between Vanderbilt and the conference’s top programs. The Commodores will need to rely on discipline, execution, and limiting mistakes to stay in the games against teams with more speed and depth.

Final Thoughts:
Head coach Clark Lea has done an excellent job changing the direction of the Vanderbilt program, and the Commodores enter 2026 with more confidence than they’ve had in years. While depth and overall talent remain to be challenges, Vanderbilt has become a competitive football team that will not be an easy win.
