What’s to like:
Mississippi State enters year three under Jeff Lebby. By this point, the Bulldogs should have a stronger understanding of the coaching staff’s expectations, schemes, and overall vision for the program. The first two seasons of a rebuild are often about laying foundation and figuring out a coaching style that suits your players, while year three is when tangible progress is expected to show up on the field.
There is also excitement surrounding the young talent on the roster. The Bulldogs have invested heavily in player development and will be counting on several young players to take major steps forward this season. There are promising pieces that could emerge as building blocks for the future. Expectations outside the program are relatively modest, which allows the Bulldogs to play with less pressure than many of their other conference rivals. If the young core develops quickly, Mississippi State could outperform preseason projections.
What’s not to like:
While Jeff Lebby has improved their roster, recruiting rankings and overall roster depth continue to trail behind conference powers. Closing that gap takes time, and it remains one of the biggest obstacles preventing the Bulldogs from consistently competing near the top of the league.
The defense also remains a major question mark entering the season. MSU struggled to consistently stop opposing offenses last year, and there are still concerns whether the unit has enough playmakers and depth to hold up. Improvement on that side of the ball is crucial if the Bulldogs hope to take a step forward. Even if the offense shows progress, MSU could find itself in too many shootouts if the defense fails to make significant strides.

Final Thoughts:
Jeff Lebby enters his third season with a clearer vision for the program and a young roster that continues to develop. The Bulldogs still have work to do to close the talent gap within the SEC, but there are signs the foundation is being built. If the defense improves and the younger players continue to develop, Mississippi State could take another step forward this year.
