2026 South Carolina Football Preview

What’s to like:
South Carolina has quietly become one of the more psychical teams in the SEC, especially along the line of scrimmage. The Gamecocks have improved their defensive front, giving them the ability to stop the run and generate pressure without having to rely on constant blitzes. That type of defense gives South Carolina a chance too stay competitive every week in a conference where physical play is essential.
The biggest reason for optimism is quarterback LaNorris Sellers. He has all the tools to become one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks with his combination of size, athleticism, and arm talent. Sellers has the ability to extend plays and create explosive opportunities, and if he continues to develop as a passer, the offense has the potential to take another step forward this season.
What’s not to like:
While Seller gives the offense plenty of upside, he will need more help from the players around him. South Carolina still has to prove it has enough consistent playmakers at wide receiver to take pressure off its quarterback. Finding a reliable target who can make plays against defenses will be important as the season progresses.
The offensive line also remains one of the biggest questions for this team. Although there has been improvement under Shane Beamer, the Gamecocks will face several of the nation’s best defensive front throughout the season. More consistent pass protection and a stronger running game will go a long way toward determining just how high South Carolina can climb the standings.

Final Thoughts:
Head Coach Shane Beamer has South Carolina moving in the right direction, and the Gamecocks enter 2026 with one of the SEC’s most exciting quarterbacks. The defense has become more physical, but continued improvement on offense will be important against the conference’s top teams. If the supporting cast around Sellers takes the next step, South Carolina could exceed expectations this season.
